ก่อนอื่นมาทำความรู้จักกับคาร์เร็ท (Caret ) กันก่อนดีกว่า
        Caret ของ Windows จะหมายถึงเส้นที่กระพริบๆ บอกตำแหน่งในพื้นที่ของ Windows บางคนก็เรียกว่า Cursor ซึ่งเป็นประโยชน์ในการใช้หาตำแหน่งของการแก้ไขตัวอักษรได้ในโปรแกรมประเภท Word Processor

        ความจริงแล้ว Windows จะสร้างรูปของ Caret โดยจะกลับสีของจุดที่อยู่ในรูปสีเหลี่ยมตามที่เราบอกแก่ Windows ด้วยค่าตำแหน่ง ความกว้างและความสูง ส่วนการกระพริบของ Caret เกิดจากการกลับสีไปมาระหว่างสีเดิมกับสีที่ตรงกันข้าม ซึ่งอัตราการกระพริบของ Caret จะวัดเป็นหนึ่งในพันของวินาที โดยขึ้นอยู่กับอัตราการกระพริบที่ตั้งใน Control Panel

        Caret ใน Windows จะมีอยู่เพียงหนึ่งเดียว ซึ่งทุกๆ Application ก็จะต้องแบ่งสันปันส่วนการใช้ Caret ร่วมกัน และก็เจ้า Windows ก็ไม่ได้มี Message มาบอกกับ Application ว่าเมื่อไรที่ Windows จะสร้างหรือทำลาย Caret ซึ่ง Windows จะจัดการกับ Caret (ย้าย ซ่อน แสดง) ในขณะที่ตนเองได้รับ Focus นั้น และจะทำลาย Caret ทันทีที่สูญเสีย Focus
